Fugitive former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn has alleged that Honda is orchestrating a "disguised takeover" of Nissan and Mitsubishi in a new interview with Automotive News. Ghosn, who fled Japan while awaiting trial for financial misconduct charges, questioned the motivations behind the partnership between the three automakers.
"I can't imagine for one moment how it's going to work," Ghosn said. "It smells like a takeover to me."
The alliance between Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi has been touted as a way for the companies to cut costs and potentially increase profits by sharing resources and developing joint technologies. However, Ghosn believes that Honda's intentions are not as altruistic as they seem.
"Honda is the dominant partner in this alliance," Ghosn said. "They have the most resources and the most experience. I think they're using this opportunity to gain control of Nissan and Mitsubishi."
